Three genuinely different living arrangements get lumped together in everyday conversation in Nepal — here's what actually separates them, and how to pick.
In everyday conversation in Nepal, "hostel," "PG," and "flat" sometimes get used almost interchangeably, which makes searching for accommodation more confusing than it needs to be. They're actually distinct arrangements with different tradeoffs.
Hostel
Shared living by seater arrangement (four-seater, three-seater, two-seater, or single room), usually with meals included or available, a warden or management on-site, and a built-in social structure — you're living alongside other students or young professionals by design. Pricing is the most predictable of the three, typically running from around NPR 11,000 to 16,000 per month depending on seater type.
PG (Paying Guest)
A step toward more independence — usually a private or semi-private room within a family home or smaller residential setup, sometimes with meals, sometimes without. Less structured than a hostel, with rules and amenities varying much more from one PG to the next, since there's no standardized model the way seater-based hostel pricing works.
Flat (independent room or apartment)
The most independence, and the most responsibility — you're managing your own utilities, cooking, and often furnishing, usually shared with roommates you find yourself rather than an arrangement a hostel manages for you. Costs vary widely and aren't standardized the way hostel seater pricing is, and you typically need a security deposit and possibly a guarantor.
Which one actually makes sense?
- New to a city, first time living away from home? A hostel's built-in structure and social environment tends to ease that transition more than a flat's full independence.
- Want more privacy but not ready for full independence? A PG sits genuinely in between, if you can find one with a policy set that fits.
- Staying long-term and want full control over your space? A flat makes more sense once you're established and know the city well enough to manage it independently.
