Thamel vs. Lakeside Pokhara: Where Backpackers Should Stay

Nepal's two most famous backpacker districts, compared honestly - what each actually offers, and how to decide between them.

Thamel in Kathmandu and Lakeside in Pokhara are the two names every backpacker in Nepal ends up hearing before they even arrive. Both are built around travelers, both are dense with budget hostels, and both get compared to each other constantly - but they're genuinely different experiences.

Thamel

Kathmandu's tourist and backpacker hub is dense, chaotic in the best way, and walkable - narrow streets packed with gear shops, budget hostels, and restaurants catering to every kind of traveler. It's the natural first and last stop for most trekking-focused trips, since it's also where you'll sort permits, gear, and transport for the mountains. Hostels here range from very basic dorm-style budget options to more polished backpacker hostels with genuine social scenes.

Lakeside, Pokhara

Built around Phewa Lake, with a fundamentally more relaxed pace than Thamel's density. This is where people come to decompress after a trek, or to base themselves for paragliding, boating, and shorter hikes rather than serious mountain trekking logistics. Hostels here tend to lean into the lake views and a slower rhythm rather than Thamel's constant motion.

So which one first?

If your trip centers on trekking - Everest, Annapurna, anything requiring permits and serious gear - Thamel is where you'll handle logistics regardless of where else you stay, so it makes sense as a starting point. If your trip is more about general travel, adventure activities, or simply unwinding, Lakeside's pace suits that better from the start.

Most travelers end up doing both at some point - Thamel for logistics and energy, Lakeside for rest. Neither is objectively "better," they're built for different parts of a trip.
